Best Picture
By Jon, Conval High School
The best recognition the creators of a movie can receive is the coveted Best Picture award at the annual Oscars. The award symbolizes a great visual achievement and celebrates the efforts of the cast and crew that made the movie possible. Every year a different movie wins the award, but I think that the 2002 Oscars are special. 2001 was a rough year for the United States and that must have had an affect on the performance and direction of this year's movies. I have done my research and read numerous reviews on movies that I have not seen that are up for the Best Picture award. I have come to the conclusion that one of two movies is going to win the prize. Those movies are A Beautiful Mind and Moulin Rouge.
Though I work at a movie theater I never got to see the film Moulin Rouge because it showed before I started, but I think I have heard/read enough about the movie know that it was spectacular. I loved the way Ed Young referred to the whole movie as an expressionist painting. He said it was the most vibrant and colorful movie he has ever seen. The thought that must have gone into the film is incredible and I think it deserves some recognition. Even though Moulin Rouge has some of the most breath-taking effects, costumes and characters I don't think it has a good chance of winning the award, though I think it should.
Now if you want to see a movie that puts a powerful image in your mind of an event that is commonly forgotten go out and see A Beautiful Mind. The movie captures the story of John Nash expertly and it delivers the feeling of what he went through. If it were not a true story, it would be almost unbelievable. Russell Crow does an excellent job playing Nash and he portrays the image of a schizophrenic well. I loved everything about that movie and it is probably my first choice for Best Picture. The film really made me think and it taught me a lot about John Nash's life and the contributions he made to society. He is truly an extraordinary person and I feel that A Beautiful Mind showed that.
The other movies up for Best Picture include The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, In the Bedroom and Gosford Park. I think they are probably all good movies, but I don't think they will win. I have not seen In the Bedroom or Gosford Park, but I have seen The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. It was a great movie with spectacular special effects and excellent acting, but the next two are supposed to be even better. If they award the first movie Best Picture they are going to have to give it to the other two, so I don't think they will. The film may win in other categories, but I don't think they are going to give it Best Picture because they most likely don't want to give the award to essentially the same movie three years in a row. I might be wrong. One of these movies may win, but I don't think they should. I think that either A Beautiful Mind or Moulin Rouge deserve the Best Picture award at the 2002 Oscars. Don't forget to tune in this Sunday the 24th!
