The Lost Colony
By Nick of NH
Between 1587 and 1591, John White, sailed back to England from a small island called Roanoke
Island. He had started a small settlement on this island with a group of about one hundred and
twenty people. The colonists were low on supplies so they asked White to travel to England. When he got
to England, he couldn't go back in a ship for about three years because England and Spain were having
a small naval war. When he was finally able to sail back to Roanoke Island, everything and everyone were
gone. The only things left were some carvings on two trees.
My theory is that the colonists were having some kind of problem on the island, so they were forced to
leave. I think that they made a ship out of wood from their houses and put everything that they had in the
ship. They probably carved the words on the trees to indicate that they were going to Croatoan Island.
When they were sailing, they got into a storm or had a leak or some sort in the ship, so they sank and
never made it to the island. That is my reason why no one has found any evidence of the colonists on
Roanoke Mystery. It also explains why no one has found any evidence of the colonists on Croatoan Island.
In conclusion, when John White went to Roanoke after being England for a few years, he found no
colonists or buildings. My theory was that the colonists made a boat from their houses and somehow sank.
I also thought that the settlers wrote Croatoan on one of the trees to indicate that was the island that
they were heading. That is why no one has found any evidence of the
colonists.
